Jacob Bowen was born in 1885 in Russia, to a Jewish family. He immigrated to the United States with his family, settling in San Francisco at the age of fifteen. At eighteen he enlisted as a private in the US Army and served for four years. After his discharge, he moved to Los Angeles and began working as a stenographer for many years
During this time, he wrote articles for newspapers and magazines and published his first book, The Chinese House. In the early 1940s, Jacob Bowen became a successful screenwriter and producer. He was a director of William Wellman's motion pictures; The Ox-Bow Incident (1943) and The Gunfighter (1945).
The Gunfighter was nominated for an Academy Award as Best Picture of 1944. In 1946, Bowen sold his screenplay to David O. Selznick for $300,000.
He then received his first Academy Award nomination as Best Story and Director of his film, The Brave Bulls (1949).
